Hockey
Hockey participation overview
Hockey is the 3rd most popular team sport for female participation and the 14th most popular physical activity.
Participation in hockey has been declining over the past few years.
The sport has the most equal female to male ratio of all Sport England funded sports – approximately 1:1, and is also one of a handful of sports where 16-19 year old participation is proportionally higher for women than it is for men.
Hockey is most popular among women in the South West and South East. London has the lowest hockey levels – as is the case for most sports.
London Playing Fields Foundation - Active Angels
Active Angels is an innovative multi-activity project that aims to contribute to the health of 14-16 year old girls by encouraging and sustaining their participation in sporting activity. It focuses on girls who are currently active but who are at risk of adopting sedentary lifestyles once they have left school. The project has been providing opportunities for girls to participate in sports and physical activity in a non-competitive, friendly and supportive environment since 2004.
