In collaboration with sports coach UK, WSFF has jointly developed a series of factsheets aimed at coaches who coach women or who are interested in coaching them in the future.
Background
Very little research currently exists on coaching women, and so little is known about the current experience of female athletes – both good and bad. In 2010, WSFF and sports coach UK carried out some bespoke research to better understand this experience. Through interviews with nearly 40 young high performing athletes and their coaches from athletics and basketball, we were able to understand what these women want from their coaches in terms of athletic improvements, communication, technical expertise and support.
Tools to support coaches
The insight gained from this research, along with other research, has resulted in the joint development of a series of factsheets aimed at people interested in coaching women. The 6 factsheets highlight the qualities that female athletes are looking for in a coach, along with physiological and psychological differences between male and female athletes, debunking the stereotypical myths about female athletes, devloping female coaches and socially inclusive coaching.The factsheets can be found here:
