The 2011 Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards launched this week in partnership with The Women’s Sport & Fitness Foundation (WSFF).
Since 1988, The Sunday Times has led the way in recognising the tremendous contribution made by Britain’s most prominent sportswomen. Previous winners of the main award include Paula Radcliffe, Pippa Funnell, Denise Lewis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Zara Phillips and Victoria Pendleton. England rugby union flanker Maggie Alphonsi, the star of the 2010 women’s rugby world cup finals, was crowned our overall winner last November.
WSFF works towards raising the profile of female sportswomen as positive role models to encourage more women and girls to get involved with sport and live an active lifestyle. The Sportswomen of the Year Awards are a natural fit in which to increase awareness of some of the UK’s most talented female sports stars.
Other partners include the Sport and Recreation Alliance, UK Sport and Sport England.
Sue Tibballs, Chief Executive of the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, said:
“We are delighted to again be part of the Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards for another year. 2011 has been an exciting year in women’s sport and as we look forward to the Olympics next year, there is no better time to celebrate and highlight the achievements of UK’s sportswomen.
“It’s vital that we use strong and successful examples of female sports stars to encourage more girls and women to be interested, take part in sport and get active - whether they’re our elite stars of tomorrow or just wanting to get a bit fitter and have some fun.”
The Awards will recognise teams who have achieved success at elite level as well as our young performers and disabled athletes. After the nomination process has closed a judging panel will decide upon the respective winners and runners-up, the names of which will be announced at an evening ceremony at a later date.
Now in their 24th year, The Sportswomen of the Year Awards are among the most prestigious and influential in the British sporting calendar.
The four award categories are:
The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year
The ultimate accolade for your favourite sportswoman of this year
Young Sportswoman of the Year
Nominees must be 21 years of age or younger
Team of the Year
Celebrating the achievements of Britain’s successful collective efforts
Disabled Sportswoman of the Year
The outstanding figure within a disability sport
Nominations close at midnight on Monday October 31, 2011. You can nominate by visiting: http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/public/sportswomen/article786670.ece
