Women’s sports charity picks up World Cup winnings

Following the excitement of the FIFA 2011 Women’s World Cup, the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) today received a £6,000 cheque from bookmakers William Hill after securing the winnings from the tournament in Germany. It may not have resulted in the possible £73,000 jackpot landing on the charity’s desk if England had won the tournament, but the money will still be put to excellent use in inspiring more women to play sport, including activity to help increase participation.

With the FA Women’s Super League (WSL) now back in action, we’re hoping England’s successful World Cup campaign will boost the sport in the UK and engage more fans and media attention. The World Cup quarter final against France gave William Hill their first ever six figure turnover for ladies’ football and the return of the WSL could spark a whole new betting interest.

Britain’s biggest bookmaker placed £5,000 worth of bets on behalf of WSFF as follows:

  • £2,000 on England to win the tournament
  • £1,000 on Kelly Smith to be tournament top scorer
  • £1,000 on Kelly Smith to be player of the tournament
  • £1,000 that England will not have any player sent off during the tournament
  • If all bets were successful the profit would have been £73,000

The first three bets failed to come through but England didn’t have any players sent off during the tournament resulting in the £6,000 pay out.
