Women’s sports charity nets £6,000 from bookmaker deal
After an eventful World Cup campaign England’s women weren’t the only one’s to come away with some success from a quarter final place in Germany, as they scored the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) a £6,000 cheque from bookmakers William Hill. Despite a possible £73,000 pay out if the team went on to win the tournament, the money is still a superb result for the national charity.
WSFF Chief Executive Sue Tibballs said, "We were gutted to see England lose on Saturday but their performances will have inspired many thousands of girls to play football and they have done the country proud."
WSFF managed another key victory during the World Cup in convincing the BBC to change its Saturday evening schedule in favour of the France game live on BBC2. William Hill’s spokesperson Graham Sharpe said, “The live showing of the match by BBC2 really boosted betting turnover and the game became our first six figure turnover match for ladies' football.”
Sue Tibballs concluded, "We are very grateful to William Hill for their support during the World Cup and the fact that they are reporting much more betting activity around women's sport is just another example of its growing popularity and profile.”
