With Open arms - Golf
The Open has kicked off at Royal St George's in Sandwich. Such a prestigious event will have the eyes of the world on Golf over the course of the tournament, with a range of British hopefuls in the running.
Controversy sparked yesterday as Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of R&A, was questioned as to why the tournament is being held at men-only members' club. Dawson defended the choice of venue when interviewed.
In response to this, Sue Tibballs, Chief Executive of the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, said:
“The Open is a highlight of the sporting calendar and has the ability to send a real message about equality in sport. It’s disappointing that in the 21st Century half the population are excluded from playing at certain golf courses just because of their gender. It’s time for the R&A to make a progressive stand on this issue, and bring golf into line with other, more enlightened, sports. In doing so the R&A could open up the sport to a new generation of female followers and the sponsorship opportunities this brings with it.”
