Olympic countdown begins – one year to go
27 July 2011 marks an important day in the world of sport with just one year to go until the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games. Celebrations are happening across the country today to highlight and mark the countdown.
Currently, over 80% of women do too little exercise to benefit their health and young women leave school half as active as young men. The 2012 Olympics has the potential to change this, engaging women and girls in sport, and starting to reverse the decline of women’s participation levels.
Sue Tibballs, Chief Executive of the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, said:
“The excitement and anticipation is building for the London 2012 Games and now with only a year to go, the buzz feels more real than ever.
“I’m sure the organisers will do us proud in terms of putting on a spectacular show, but through this we need to seize the opportunity to highlight women’s sport and female role models to the maximum.
“In the build up to next summer, let’s work together to reach out to those women watching, in the stadium or at home, and inspire them to have a go at sport themselves. We have 365 days to prepare for this chance of a lifetime.”
The Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation work closely with sports governing bodies and deliverers, the media and policy makers to offer help, persuade and inspire women and girls to be more active.
