British guard Johannah Leedham received the ultimate university graduation present on Thursday after being selected by the Connecticut Sun in the third round (27th pick) of the 2010 WNBA Draft.
The Ellesmere Port native is finishing her senior year at New Hampshire's Franklin Pierce University and has amassed a number of records, not only for her school but for the whole of the NCAA.
The first Franklin Pierce student to be drafted by the WNBA, Leedham became the all-time scoring leader for NCAA Div II this season with a career total 3,050 points, also fifth highest in women's college basketball history amongst all divisions. Her 459 career steals is 7th most in NCAA Division II history, making her the only player in the Division to be in the all-time top ten in steals and points.
Leedham's success did not begin in the USA, however. Together with sister Jennifer (also a former Franklin Pierce player), Johannah led her Ellesmere Port Panthers to numerous cup, league and playoff titles in her teens before making the move stateside.
Her international record also speaks for itself, as one of England's leaders at Under 16 and Under 18 European Championships and most recently, she was selected as British Basketball’s Player of the year in 2009.
